Surfing is fun but you should be spending your time writing now writing your college essays if you’re a rising senior. But is that all you should be doing? No. What else should you be doing? Give us a ring for a free consultation to find out (photo credit: Mark Baird).

The time is now to start to write college essays! School is letting out. Your exams are finishing. But just because the sun is out and the ocean’s warm, that doesn’t mean you should be out on the beach enjoying yourself. Sure, you can do that a little. We support that. Enjoy your summers — when you join the workforce, they may well disappear. But still, you’ve got to start to write your college essays now. You don’t want to wait until the end of summer or, worse, the beginning of fall. That’s when you’ll be starting school again. Do you really want to be writing your essays while doing your coursework, while studying for exams? We don’t think so.

Start brainstorming now. You don’t have to start writing immediately. But start thinking about what you want to write about. Start thinking about what makes you who you are, what makes you distinctive in a sea of thousands and thousands. What is your unique point of view, your unique perspective on life that you can bring to a highly selective college? What do you love to do? What do you aspire to do? These are questions you should start asking yourself as you think about your essays.

And then, think smaller. Often, the best essays are about the smallest of things. It could be about a rubber-band ball. It could be about a book or a dream. It could be about a car ride or a tradition you share with your family. Whatever stories you choose to tell in your college essays, make sure that it’s interesting. Make sure that it’s not trite. Don’t write about sports if you can avoid it. Don’t write about playing the violin if you can think of something else to write about. Write something that will be refreshing for college admissions counselors to read. Write something that they’ll remember and will make them think — now this kid is special, this kid is someone I want to admit.

The time has come. The time is now. Get thinking. Get writing. Your college essays aren’t going to write themselves!

The time is now to start to write your college essays! Not tomorrow. Now. Start typing.

Now that school is out for summer, it’s time to start to write your college essays! You no longer have schoolwork and studying to use as an excuse. Now is the perfect time to begin the process of brainstorming exactly what you’re going to write about for college admissions counselors to read. And then once you’re done brainstorming, it’s time to start actually typing those essays! If you wait until the fall, you’ll be inundated with schoolwork all over again and you’ll be sorry you didn’t take advantage of the summer months to write possibly the most important essays you’ll ever write.

While five years ago, students who applied to highly selective colleges tended to apply to 9 to 12 universities, students now often apply to as many as 15 colleges. And there are even some students who apply to the maximum number of colleges allowed by the Common App. That would mean that they apply to 20 colleges. Yes, you read that figure correctly! And if you’re wondering, we at The Ivy Coach think applying to 20 colleges is completely over the top. But even if you’re applying to, say, 12 to 15 colleges, know that you’ve got a whole lot of college essays ahead of you to write.

In addition to the two essays on the Common App, many highly selective colleges have supplemental  essays. In fact, some of the highly selective colleges have as many as 5 or 6 supplemental essays! So don’t think just because you’ve knocked out the two Common App. essays that you’re done. You’re a long way from done. You’re closer to just getting started! So start brainstorming…and start writing your college essays! Now. Seriously.
